Photography and the quiet luxury of Bethany Beach is something I found myself thinking about when I saw an image of an osprey coming out of the ocean with a fish in its talons, because it captured the kind of moment that can happen in an instant and be gone almost before you realize what you have seen.
T/he best photos. Anyone who enjoys photography knows that some of the best photographs are the ones you cannot really plan. You can go out with a camera expecting to photograph the sunrise, the beach or the water, and then something completely different happens. An osprey appears overhead, circles for a few moments and suddenly drops toward the ocean. If you are paying attention and you are quick enough, you may come home with a photograph that is far more interesting than the one you went out hoping to take. Even if you miss the picture, though, you still had the experience, and I think that is part of what makes living near the coast so enjoyable.
Always changing. Bethany Beach gives you plenty of those opportunities because the surroundings are always changing. The ocean may be calm and almost glassy one morning and much more dramatic the next. The light changes throughout the day, the seasons change the character of the beach, and the wildlife seems to appear on its own schedule. That unpredictability is exactly what makes coastal photography so interesting. You can photograph the same stretch of shoreline dozens of times and still end up with something completely different each time.
Ospreys in the summer. Ospreys are especially fascinating to watch because they are so closely connected to the water. Delaware DNREC notes that ospreys are now commonly seen during the summer months and describes the recovery of Delaware’s osprey population as one of the state’s conservation success stories. Cornell’s All About Birds also notes that ospreys are strongly associated with shorelines and waterways and feed almost entirely on live fish. That makes a photograph of one emerging from the water with a fish more than just a dramatic wildlife image; it is a very natural part of the coastal environment happening right in front of you.
Photography and owning a luxury Bethany Beach oceanfront home. When people first begin looking at luxury homes in Bethany Beach, photography usually is not one of the first things we talk about. Buyers are understandably focused on the property itself. They want to know about the location, the ocean access, the views, the privacy, the condition of the home, the outdoor living spaces and whether there is enough room for the family and friends they expect to have visiting. Those are important considerations, and they should be, because a luxury property is a significant decision.
Head to the beach with a camera. What often happens after someone has owned the home for a while, however, is that they begin to appreciate things they never really thought about during the buying process. Being able to head toward the beach early in the morning with a camera is one of those smaller pleasures that can become surprisingly meaningful, especially if photography or nature is already something you enjoy.
Slowing down. You may start out simply wanting to photograph the sunrise, but before long you find yourself noticing much more. You begin watching the birds overhead, looking at the clouds, noticing how the color of the water changes depending on the weather, and paying attention to the way the early morning light falls across the beach. Photography has a way of slowing you down and making you look more carefully at a place you may otherwise have walked past without noticing very much.
Luxury home location. That is one of the reasons I think the location of a luxury home deserves to be considered in a broader way. Location is certainly about value, privacy and proximity to the ocean, but it also affects what becomes part of your ordinary day. If you enjoy photography, bird watching, walking or simply being outdoors, a home near the coast can make those things much easier to enjoy because you do not have to make a special trip every time you want to experience them.
Spending more time outdoors. You can take the camera along on a morning walk. You can step outside because the sky looks interesting. You can head toward the beach because you noticed unusual clouds moving in over the Atlantic. Sometimes you may come back with a photograph you really like, and other times you may not take a single picture. Either way, you have spent some time outdoors paying attention to the place where you chose to live.
Photos tell the story. Over time, those photographs begin to tell their own story. You may have pictures of the ocean in July when the beach is full of activity, and then another set taken in late fall when everything is quieter and the light feels completely different. You begin to see how much Bethany Beach changes throughout the year, even though the ocean itself is always there. For someone who lives here, that can become one of the pleasures of photography: you are not simply taking pictures of a destination you visited once; you are documenting a place you know well enough to notice its small changes.
Bethany Beach Nature Center. The Town of Bethany Beach also recognizes how much wildlife surrounds this area. Its Nature Center information notes that the nearby Baldwin Trail supports more than 100 species of wild birds, along with ospreys and other coastal wildlife. That kind of natural setting may not be the reason someone first begins looking at Bethany Beach luxury real estate, but it can become one more part of what they enjoy about owning here.
Meeting luxury homeowner’s expectations. I have always believed that the best luxury properties are not simply the ones that look impressive when you first walk through the door. The right home should certainly meet a buyer’s expectations for design, quality, privacy, location and value, but it should also fit comfortably into the way that person wants to spend their time. That is something I try to understand when I am working with a buyer, because two homes can be equally beautiful and still offer very different experiences once you actually live in them.
Easier access to the things you love doing. If someone tells me that photography is important to them, that tells me something. If they enjoy walking, bird watching, fishing or simply being close to the ocean, that tells me something too. Those interests help define what location may mean to that particular buyer, because luxury is not always about having more features inside the house. Sometimes it is about having easier access to the things you already love doing.
And that is what I see in a photograph of an osprey catching breakfast along the coast. I see a remarkable wildlife image, certainly, but I also see one of those unplanned moments that can become part of living near the ocean. You may step outside expecting an ordinary morning and find yourself watching something you could never have scheduled. If you happened to have a camera with you, you might even bring the moment home.
And if you did not, you would probably remember it anyway.
